The Thumper DX is a ballistic explosive weapon variant used by the Soldier class in Tribes: Ascend. It can be unlocked for 40 Gold or 4800 XP.

"Another thumper variant. With more damage but less explosion radius." In-Game Description.

Operation[]

The Thumper DX fires a red trailed grenade projectile that explodes after a time delay (of about two seconds) or until it collides with a surface or player. This weapon is not as powerful as the Spinfusor for a few reasons, primary that it has a limited range and its projectiles travel in a low arc instead of a straight line. However the Thumper DX has a much higher reload speed. This allows the player to fire off one shot, knock their opponent into a wall, and quickly fire again at the halted target. Because of this feature it is a weapon that excels in indoor combat.

The Thumper can be upgraded to at maximum hold 20 shells, and penetrate 20% more armor. The armor penetration upgrade is essential for effectively using the Thumper against vehicles and heavily armored Targets.

Firing the Thumper and learning how to manage your shell trajectory is not an easy task. Because there is a maximum distance to the Thumper it is essential to learn when Targets are simply out of range. It is very easy to run out of Thumper shells, especially if the player doesn't yet have the ammo upgrades.

Compared to the Thumper D, The Thumper DX trades smaller explosion radius for higher maximum damage. Soldiers who are able to get regular direct hits with the Thumper D should switch to the Thumper DX.

Tactics[]

  • Combating the Spinfusor:

Since the Spinfusor and it's variations are the most popular weapons in the game, it helps to learn how to deal with these opponents in combat. Generally speaking close range is the only way the player will be able to create more of a threat than their opponent. Trying to stay above them also helps utilize the Thumper's drop off point. After some practice one can reliably hit targets with the time delayed explosion, which allows for a larger field of engagement once mastered.
